Our EMI Calculator helps you calculate your Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) for any loan - home loans, car loans, personal loans, education loans, and more. Get detailed breakdown of principal, interest, total payment, and see an amortization schedule to understand how your loan payments work.
What is EMI?
EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) is the fixed amount you pay every month to repay your loan. Each EMI consists of two parts: principal repayment and interest payment. Initially, a larger portion goes toward interest, and as the loan progresses, more goes toward principal repayment.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter your loan amount (principal).
- Enter the annual interest rate percentage.
- Enter the loan tenure in years and/or months.
- Click "Calculate EMI" to see your results.
- View detailed breakdown, payment distribution chart, and amortization schedule.
What You'll Get
- Monthly EMI: Your fixed monthly payment amount.
- Total Interest: Total interest you'll pay over the loan tenure.
- Total Payment: Principal + Total Interest (total amount you'll pay).
- Payment Breakdown: Average principal and interest per month.
- Payment Distribution: Visual chart showing principal vs interest ratio.
- Amortization Schedule: Month-by-month breakdown of first 12 months showing principal, interest, and remaining balance.
EMI Formula
The EMI is calculated using the standard formula:
EMI = [P × R × (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N - 1]
Where:
- P = Principal loan amount
- R = Monthly interest rate (Annual rate / 12 / 100)
- N = Number of monthly installments
Understanding Your Results
Monthly EMI
This is the fixed amount you need to pay every month. It remains constant throughout the loan tenure, but the proportion of principal and interest changes each month.
Payment Distribution
The visual chart shows what portion of your total payment goes toward principal (green) and interest (orange). This helps you understand the cost of borrowing.
Amortization Schedule
The schedule shows how your loan balance decreases over time. In the early months, most of your payment goes toward interest. As you progress, more goes toward principal repayment.
Factors Affecting EMI
- Loan Amount: Higher loan amount = Higher EMI
- Interest Rate: Higher interest rate = Higher EMI
- Loan Tenure: Longer tenure = Lower EMI (but more total interest)
Tips for Loan Planning
- Compare Options: Use the calculator to compare different loan offers and interest rates.
- Affordability: Ensure your EMI doesn't exceed 40-50% of your monthly income.
- Prepayment: Consider making prepayments to reduce total interest and loan tenure.
- Shorter Tenure: While it increases EMI, shorter tenure reduces total interest paid.
- Interest Rate: Even a small difference in interest rate can significantly impact total payment.
Common Loan Types
- Home Loan: Typically 15-30 years, lower interest rates, secured by property.
- Car Loan: Typically 3-7 years, moderate interest rates, secured by vehicle.
- Personal Loan: Typically 1-5 years, higher interest rates, unsecured.
- Education Loan: Typically 5-15 years, moderate interest rates, may have grace period.
