Moon Phase Today: Current Phase, Illumination and Next Full Moon
See what phase the Moon is in right now, how much of it is lit, how old it is and when the next new and full moons arrive. The Moon is drawn as it really looks, the phase animates as you scrub through time or play a whole lunar month, and everything is worked out in your browser from a full model of the Sun and Moon, accurate to about a minute.
The eight phases of the Moon
- New Moon: the Moon sits between Earth and the Sun, so its lit side faces away. In Nepal this is Aunsi (Amavasya).
- Waxing Crescent: a thin sliver on the right (northern hemisphere) that grows each night.
- First Quarter: half the disc is lit, a week after new moon.
- Waxing Gibbous: more than half is lit and still growing.
- Full Moon: the whole face is lit, about two weeks after new moon. In Nepal this is Purnima.
- Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent: the lit part shrinks back to the next new moon.
Moon age, illumination and tithi
The Moon takes about 29.5 days to go from one new moon to the next. Moon age is the number of days since the last new moon. Illumination is the percentage of the visible disc that is lit. The tithi is the Nepali and Hindu lunar day: every 12 degrees the Moon pulls ahead of the Sun there is a new tithi, with 15 in the bright half (Shukla paksha) ending at Purnima and 15 in the dark half (Krishna paksha) ending at Aunsi.

What is a supermoon or a blue moon?
A supermoon is a full moon that happens when the Moon is close to its nearest point to Earth, so it looks a little bigger and brighter. A blue moon is the second full moon in one calendar month.
Why the Moon looks different in the southern hemisphere
Seen from the southern hemisphere the Moon appears upside down, so the lit side switches. Use the Northern sky and Southern sky switch to see both views.
