What is SIP?
SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) is a method of investing a fixed amount regularly (typically monthly) in mutual funds or other investment instruments. SIPs help you build wealth over time through the power of compounding and rupee cost averaging.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter your monthly investment amount (the fixed amount you invest every month).
- Enter your expected annual returns percentage (typically 8-15% for mutual funds, but can vary).
- Enter your investment period in years and/or months.
- Click "Calculate SIP" to see your results.
- View maturity value, total invested, gains, and year-wise growth breakdown.
What You'll Get
- Maturity Value: The total amount you'll receive at the end of your investment period.
- Total Invested: Sum of all your monthly investments over the period.
- Total Gains: The profit/returns earned on your investment (Maturity Value - Total Invested).
- Return Percentage: The percentage return on your total investment.
- Investment Distribution: Visual chart showing invested vs gains ratio.
- Year-wise Growth: Breakdown showing how your investment grows each year.
SIP Formula
The calculator uses the standard SIP formula:
M = P × [((1 + r)^n - 1) / r] × (1 + r)
Where:
- M = Maturity Value
- P = Monthly Investment Amount
- r = Monthly Rate of Return (Annual Rate / 12 / 100)
- n = Number of monthly installments
Benefits of SIP
- Discipline: Forces regular investing habits.
- Rupee Cost Averaging: Buy more units when prices are low, fewer when high.
- Compounding: Your returns generate more returns over time.
- Flexibility: Start with small amounts and increase gradually.
- Long-term Wealth: Small regular investments can grow significantly over time.
Understanding Your Results
Maturity Value
This is the total amount you'll have at the end of your investment period. It includes both your invested amount and the returns/gains earned through compounding.
Total Invested vs Gains
The visual chart shows what portion of your maturity value is from your investments (green) versus gains/returns (blue). Higher gains mean better returns on your investment.
Year-wise Growth
The table shows how your investment grows each year. Notice how gains compound over time - the growth accelerates as your investment base increases.
Factors Affecting SIP Returns
- Monthly Investment: Higher monthly investment = Higher maturity value.
- Expected Returns: Higher returns = Higher maturity value, but also higher risk.
- Investment Period: Longer tenure = Higher maturity value due to compounding.
- Market Volatility: Actual returns may vary based on market conditions.
Tips for SIP Investment
- Start Early: The earlier you start, the more time compounding has to work.
- Stay Consistent: Regular investments are key to SIP success.
- Long-term Approach: SIPs work best over long periods (5+ years).
- Review Regularly: Adjust your SIP amount as your income grows.
- Diversify: Consider investing in different types of funds for better risk management.
- Realistic Expectations: Use conservative return estimates (8-12% for equity funds).
Common SIP Scenarios
- Conservative SIP: $500/month at 8% for 10 years = ~$91,000 maturity value.
- Moderate SIP: $1,000/month at 12% for 15 years = ~$500,000 maturity value.
- Aggressive SIP: $2,000/month at 15% for 20 years = ~$2.9 million maturity value.
Note: These are examples for illustration. Actual returns depend on market conditions and fund performance.
