Play Bagh-Chal Online Free: The Tiger and Goat Game of Nepal
Bagh-Chal (also written Baghchal or Bagh Chal, meaning “move the tiger”) is a traditional two-player strategy board game from Nepal. One player controls four tigers and the other controls twenty goats on a 5×5 grid of points. This version runs in your browser with a computer opponent at three levels, a two-player mode for one device, and online rooms you share with a four-letter code.
Bagh-Chal rules
- The four tigers start on the four corners. The goats start off the board, with twenty in hand, and move first.
- Goats take turns placing one goat on any empty point until all twenty are on the board. After that they slide one step along a line to an empty neighbouring point.
- A tiger moves one step along a line to an empty point, or jumps in a straight line over an adjacent goat to the empty point directly behind it, capturing that goat.
- Diagonal lines exist only through the points where the board shows them, so check the lines before you plan a move.
- The tigers win by capturing five goats. The goats win by trapping all four tigers so that none can move.
Tips for the goats and the tigers
Goats are safest on the edges and in solid groups with no empty point behind them for a tiger to land on. Fill the corners early to restrict the tigers. Tigers should stay in the middle, spread apart, and look for two capture threats at once so the goats cannot cover both.
