Nepali Unicode to Roman and Roman to Nepali
Write a Nepali name in English letters, read a Romanized message, or type phonetically and get proper Nepali Unicode. The converter works in both directions and everything runs in your browser.
Three ways to write Nepali in Roman letters
- Everyday: how people actually write names and messages. नेपाल becomes nepal, रामको becomes ramko, धन्यवाद becomes dhanyawad. Turn off “drop silent middle a” to keep every a (Pokhara, Pashupatinath).
- Typeable: the exact reverse of the Roman typing scheme used on this site, with aa, ee and oo for long vowels and capital letters for T, D and N. Converting the result back gives the original Nepali.
- Academic: scholarly IAST marks such as nepāl and ṛṣi.
Roman to Nepali typing
Type the way it sounds: “namaste” becomes नमस्ते, “ksh” becomes क्ष and “tr” becomes त्र. Use capital letters for retroflex sounds, and put English words in curly braces to leave them alone. The typing guide on the page lists every key.
How it works
The converter follows the rules of the Devanagari script: consonants carry an inherent a, conjuncts join with a halant, and vowel signs attach to consonants. There is no dictionary, so unusual names and borrowed words can occasionally need a small fix.
