Dashain Countdown: How Many Days Are Left?
This page counts down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until Dashain (दशैं). The date is shown in both the English calendar and the Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar, with a day-by-day schedule, and you can add it to your calendar or share it with friends and family.
About Dashain
Dashain is the longest and most important festival in Nepal. It lasts fifteen days and honours the goddess Durga's victory over evil. It begins with Ghatasthapana, when jamara (barley shoots) are planted in a sacred pot, and builds to Vijaya Dashami, the tenth day.
On Vijaya Dashami, elders put red tika and jamara on the foreheads of younger relatives and give blessings and dakshina. Families travel home, bamboo swings (ping) go up in villages and kites fill the sky. The tika continues for several days until the full moon.
How the countdown works
The counter runs to midnight at the start of the festival day in Nepal (UTC+5:45), so it is correct wherever you are in the world. Dashain depends on the lunar calendar, so its English date changes each year and is confirmed shortly before the festival. When the festival has passed, the page tells you when the next date is available.
